The sixteenth annual Battle of the Books competition took place on
Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Longfellow Elementary School. This
literacy competition is designed to motivate students to read and have
fun doing so! In addition, the Battle of the Books encourages book
discussions, while promoting responsibility and cooperative behavior.

Each team member was responsible for reading nine books from a list of
twenty-seven assigned books. The books covered a variety of levels,
genres and interests. The Battle of the Books is organized by Holly
Hansen-Grotbeck from Longfellow School and Lori Roelse from
Jefferson/Pigeon River Schools.
There were fifty-two teams of
fifth graders competing. Participating schools included Cleveland,
Cooper, Grant, Jackson, James Madison, Lincoln-Erdman, Longfellow,
Pigeon River and Sheridan Elementary Schools. The top twenty teams were
recognized with individual ribbons, medals or trophies. All of the
students are to be commended for their effort and participation.
